I’ve been teaching multimedia journalism at Cuesta College, located in San Luis Obispo, CA for the past three years. I teach this asynchronous, distance education course from Seattle, so my students and I interact through Canvas and Zoom.
I use many approaches and exercises to cover lots of digital media topics, including: Storytelling fundamentals, image composition, audio recording, audio slideshow production, video interviews, video composition, video editing, infographic production, data visualization, social media and the news, and media literacy and ethics.
I introduce students to multimedia reporting, storytelling, and technology through formative exercises and lessons. Students learn by doing, and many multimedia stories are published during the semester, and many students go on to earn journalism degrees and work as multimedia storytellers.
